Master the OVITZ xwave System

For years I have read literature about HOA correcting scleral lenses from various research laboratories. The papers reported excellent results and inspired a high level of interest in the technology. At CLEI, we attempted to create HOA correcting lenses based on the principles laid out by these studies but the process was extremely difficult and failed frequently. OVITZ has a streamlined system and my experience with it has been exceptional. Our data has shown reductions in HOAs by about half and 1-2 lines of visual acuity and in some cases as much as 5 lines of improvement. This is consistent with the published data. I’m thrilled to see this technology make it from the lab to clinical practice.

We run OVITZ aberrometry on every patient that comes through the office. The data is invaluable and I can’t imagine practicing without it now! We use it to assess the impact of cataracts as well as dry eye disease, which is often not yet visually measurable by other means, but yet is still subjectively noticeable by the patients. We use it to empathetically support our post-surgical patients symptomatic of HOA (LASIK, multifocal IOLs, retinal surgery) and our patients really appreciate feeling understood and that the data supports what they’re experiencing. And from a business standpoint, it’s been particularly profitable and effective by facilitating custom HOA-correcting scleral lenses for our symptomatic scleral lens patients. The results have been very impressive, often reducing the total HOAs in half and dramatically reducing the most disruptive individual HOAs

I've integrated HOA aberrometry testing with both my scleral lens patients and my general patients when it comes to my scleral lens patients. It's to maximize their quality of vision. Whether it's to try and reach 20/20 or to enhance their 20/20 vision that they already have. With my general patients, I use it as a diagnostic tool to try and understand what's happening in their visual system and that may include patients that come in who are complaining about glare and halos that for years they've said it but no one's ever been able to have an answer for them.

I want to be at the top of my game, and in order to do that, I needed to bring in high order aberration correction into the office.

Don't be afraid to offer it. [Most] patients don't know that it exist unless you bring it up.

Being able to scan a patient and seeing the plots, knowing what's going on...now I can explain to the patient what they are seeing and why they are seeing the way they are...The patients are definitely appreciative whether or not they go for it

The thing I enjoy the most of fitting scleral lenses right now is the advancement in optics with higher order aberration correction. I've found patients seeing multiple lines better, subjective improvements in symptoms and really has made a difference. We're using it more and more.
